For some reason, somebody makes solid carbon fiber doors, hoods, and hatches for my car. It would cost about as much as the car is worth to order some, and the fact that I can’t garage my car would be hell on them unless I wash and wax it every week, but still. If I won the lottery, I think I would go ahead and do it.
That, combined with a stripped interior, would easily push me up to and over 40mpg (I get 25-30 as is) and allow me to accelerate at a similar rate to normal cars.
I’d basically have my own version of a FWD Lotus Elise, but with a hell of a lot more room and a hell of a lower insurance rate.
It weighs a bit over 2,300lbs now. The new body panels alone would put it at around 2,000, and the stripped interior would drop it a couple hundred more. Probably still more than the first-gen Elise (1,598lbs) but comparable to the second-gen (1,896lbs) and probably a bit lower. It would only have about half the power, but if I’m already doing this, what’s to stop me from a Mazda BPT engine swap? That’s the same engine as the EGT, except with a turbo on it. So that’s like 150-something bhp in a car that weighs next to nothing...
I mean, if you want a FWD track day killer for under $10,000, you could absolutely build up an Escort like this. Hell, if you buy used parts and do your own work, you could probably even do that with less than $5,000, including the price of the car itself. And it will be using a fully stock engine/transmission that can be upgraded to your liking to bring the thing up to god-knows-what.
Get some mismatched vinyl to cover the carbon fiber and leave the rest of the car dented and mildly rusty, and you’ve got one hell of a sleeper.

At one point I am going to do something crazy like that. Get it all painted so nobody knows. I wonder how much carbon fiber i can put on an e30...

Now I want carbon bits, too. I wonder what sort of performance I could gain with CF grille, handles, tailgate and hood. And redo the dash with it so it both be lighter and also NOT_SQUEAK.

You should definitely swap in the BPT. I have a B6T (1.6L version) in my 323 GTX and it’s a great motor IMO.
